The Inner Necessities of Leadership

with David Whyte

November 18 & 19, 2008
The Verity Club
111d Queen Street East
Toronto, Ontario

We invite you to participate in an intimate and transformative learning conversation with poet and author David Whyte. This rare opportunity will refresh your leadership, provide new practices for addressing complex realities, and strengthen the effectiveness of your organizational action. David will explore the Inner Necessities of Leadership that form the foundation for all the outward actions we take when we are in positions of responsibility. He will also explore the ways that the cultivation of self-knowledge makes us fuller participants in a world from which we often try to hide, including:

  • becoming visible in the world
  • our relationship to time
  • radical simplicity within complexity
  • acting from intuition and courage
  • self-compassion and imagination

The Remarkable Leaders Series has been initiated by the Shambhala Institute and Context Consulting to support senior leaders from all sectors who are expanding their capacity to lead with authenticity and integrity. You are an ideal participant in this program if you've discovered the value of learning from your peers' diverse perspectives. You bring curiosity and wisdom to share with your colleagues. You are awake to the reality that the practice of leadership is requiring more of you than ever before.

David Whyte is first and foremost a poet. With a poet's inspiration and insight, he speaks to our human condition and to the core challenges individuals and organizations face today. His work strikes a resonant chord with organizations across the world and offers a vision for the way ahead. You can read an interview with David in the May 2007 issue of Harvard Business Review. David's clients include Astra Zeneca, Boeing, Deloitte, Honeywell, Microsoft, NASA, The Royal Airforce, Standard Chartered Bank, Toyota, Unilever, Visa International, and Wharton School of Business. David has published six books of poetry including The House of Belonging and is the author of The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America, and Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity. He holds a degree in Marine Biology and is a fellow of the Said Business School, University of Oxford. David grew up in Yorkshire and lives with his family in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
